Summer Sixteen Preview

Schooooool’s out for SUMMA! Congratulations on getting through another school year and making it to sweet, sweet summertime.   Whether you’re a recent grad (congrats x2) moving to the city, or an undergrad hanging around for a job or internship, the Charm City events lineup over the next couple months is insane – check it out:

Festivals

  • Honfest - Bawlmer’s best time; here’s your chance to whip out that beehive hairdo and feather boa, hon!
    • When: June 11 -12
    • Where: The Avenue, Hampden Baltimore, MD 21211
    • Don’t miss: Baltimore’s Best Hon competition (sign in starts at 10am on Saturday near the Main Stage and judging takes places at 2pm) 
  • St. Nicholas Greek Folk Festival  - The biggest Greek festival in Maryland, opa!
    • When: June 9-12
    • Where: 701 Ponca Street Baltimore, MD 21224
    • Don’t miss: the food!  Homemade baklava, moussaka, gyros ….. drooling yet?
  • Chesapeake Crab & Beer Festival -Nothin’ says summer quite like a crab feast!
    • When: June 25 (session one: 11am-3pm; session two: 5pm-9pm)
    • Where: Rash Field – Inner Harbor, Baltimore 21230
    • Don’t miss: uhh, the CRABS, of course! But also, before the feast there is the Second Annual Charm City Crab Run 5k at 9:30am for all those who enjoy a good pre-feast workout.  
  • Maryland Polish Festival – celebrate Polish culture with live music, dancing, and maybe a pierogi or two (or ten).
    • When: July 16-17
    • Where: Maryland State Fairgrounds, 2200 York Road Timonium, MD 21093
    • Don’t miss: the regional troupes dance performances
  • Artscape – the largest free arts festival in the country – yeah, that’s right – not just the biggest in Maryland, but the biggest in America!
    • When: July 15-17
    • Where: Mount Royal Avenue & Cathedral Street, Charles Street, Bolton Hill, and Station North Arts & Entertainment District neighborhoods – yepp, it’s huge!
    • Don’t miss: the headliner, Wyclef Jean on the BGE Main Stage at MICA (7:30pm Friday July 15)
  • Festival Latino de Maryland – celebrate the 5th anniversary of the largest Latino bash of the summer!
    • When: August 7
    • Where: Maryland State Fairgrounds, 2200 York Road Timonium, MD 21093
    • Don’t miss: the awesome concerts!  There’s pretty much live music going on constantly – it really contributes to the overall party vibe.
  • Maryland State Fair – the grand finale of summer ‘16 (don’t fret, it’s still a ways away) - carnival rides, farm animals, and deep-fried treats galore.
    • When: August 25 – Sept. 5
    • Where: Maryland State Fairgrounds, 2200 York Road Timonium, MD 21093
    • Don’t miss: the pig races
  • Maryland Renaissance Festival – grab a turkey leg and watch some jousting (did ya know jousting is the state sport of Maryland? Well you do now!)
    • When: Aug. 27 – Oct. 23
    • Where: 1821 Crownsville Rd, Annapolis, MD 21401
    • Don’t miss: the famed jousting competitions (they happen daily). 

Concerts

  • What better way to unwind if you’re Stressed Out than an outdoor concert? - Twenty One Pilots, MUTEMATH, and Chef’s Special
  • Anything Could Happen when British pop queen, Ellie Goulding , makes her
    way to Maryland! – Ellie Goulding and Matt & Kim 
  • You’ll want to Sail away after jamming to your favorite songs right next to the Inner Harbor - AWOLNATION
  • You won’t be Sorry you splurged on tickets for this- Justin Bieber Purpose World Tour with Post Malone and Moxie Rala
    • When: Thursday, July 7 7:30pm
  • You’ll love all the memories you make at this classic summertime concert  -  O.A.R. and Eric Hutchinson
  • Hey, (Soul Sister) you’re not going to want to miss this one- Train

                                    

Outdoor Activities
Open Air Movies – ditch the couch and enjoy a movie outside

  • Cinema al Fresco – 9:00pm Fridays in July and August in Little Italy (Corner of High & Stiles Streets), live music starts at 7:00pm plus there’s FREE popcorn! 
  • Flicks on the Hill – 9:00pm Thursdays in July and August in Federal Hill (AVAM, 800 Key Highway). Get there early because admission to AVAM is FREE 5pm-9pm, and there are usually local food trucks in the area for dinner. 
  • Penn Ave Film Project – 8:00pm Fridays in June in West Baltimore (Jubilee Arts, 1947 Pennsylvania Ave). Come ready for a night of cinematic art – each night will feature one local film artist, one visual artist, and a blockbuster movie!  
  • Hopkins Summer Outdoor Films – dusk on Fridays in June (the 10th at 17th) on the Homewood Campus Upper Quad (3400 North Charles Street)

    Live, Local Music Fridays (and Thursdays ... and Wednesdays)  - rock n’ roll your way into the weekend!

  • First Thursdays – Canton 
  • Feet on the Street – Towson
  • Frederick Road Friday – Catonsville 
  • Summer Sounds at the Square – Belvedere

  • Baltimore Public Pools – to swim (duh) 
  • Fluid Movement – watch some rockin’ water ballet 
    • Druid Hill Shows (2600 Madison Ave):
      • July 30 at 5 and 7 PM
      • July 31 at 5 and 7 PM
    • Patterson Park Shows (27 S Patterson Park Ave):
      • August 5 at 9 PM 
      • August 6 7 and 9 PM
      • August 7 5 and 7 PM 
    • All shows are $10 (expect July 30, 5pm at Druid Hill – that show is only $5)

Summertime Must Have Meals and Snacks

Crabs, Crabs, Crabs! – It’s a Maryland staple right? Here are a few local hot spots where you can hammer your way through bushels upon bushels of Maryland blue crabs:

Ice cream (of course!) – Beat the heat with a frozen sweet treat, here are a few of the city’s top spots to do just that:

Fresh, local produce – snack while you shop at one of the city’s farmers’ markets
