"My family cluster and my other friends have been invaluable."
Vanessa Barksdale
UMBC
Hometown: Baltimore, MD

Vanessa's Story

Vanessa Barksdale’s vision is to develop a diversity training curriculum for everyone on her campus: from freshman to senior faculty. Baltimore Collegetown LeaderShape provided a network and support system of like-minded peers that Vanessa knows she can count on if she is discouraged about her pursuits.  “My family cluster and my other friends have been invaluable;” and Vanessa wants everyone to be able to benefit from a sense of community and collaboration.

Throughout her college experience, Vanessa has had several internship experiences at the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office, the Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition, and SOAR (Securing Older Adults’ Resources) program.  These experiences shaped her vision to support diversity education.

Her Collegetown LeaderShape volunteer experience at CUPs (Creating Unlimited Possibilities) Coffeehouse provided valuable connections with the CUPs staff and other volunteers that will also help her develop community-informed diversity education for other college students.
