Ericka Shekell loves everything about Baltimore: the food, the people, the sports teams. She grew up coming to Baltimore, and she wants to give back to the area that is most important to her.
Her vision is to create art therapy programs for Baltimore residents who are experiencing mental illness. “Art therapy saved my life several years ago and I want to be able to provide that for as many people as I possibly can,” says Ericka.
Ericka’s Collegetown LeaderShape family cluster volunteered with the Kennedy Krieger Institute. They played with children at the institute’s in-patient clinic. “We played games with the children and they loved it, and I have a better understanding of their strengths and challenges.”
Collaborating with students from other Baltimore-area schools through Baltimore Collegetown LeaderShape helped Ericka to refine her vision and her friends were “an incredible help along the way.”
