Though Halloween is approaching, don’t let COVID ruin your chance to dress up and have some fun! While large group parties can’t unfortunately happen this year, there are many other alternatives to celebrate.

A tradition that can still be continued or started for the first time is to watch a scary movie with your roommates or over zoom with your family and friends. Freeform has started their 31 days of Halloween movies. You can find the listing of movies each day here to see what is playing. If you are looking for some other options some common scary (and kid friendly) movies are listed below. For those that are on Netflix or Disney+ there are options to watch them together.

Some recommendations for perfect Halloween scary movies are, The Shining, Get Out, The Conjuring, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and The Exorcist.

For those of you who want a kid friendly scary movie I would recommend Ghostbusters, Casper, Rocky Horror, Twitches, Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Beetlejuice, Monster House, and of course Charlie Brown, It’s the Great Pumpkin!

Here are 5 other events that you can do virtually with your friends!

  1. Virtual Costume Party

Have your friends all dress up and present their costumes via zoom. At the end there is an option to send a poll where you can judge each other's costumes and give awards. Some ideas for awards are: the most creative, funniest, or scariest.

  1. Cooking or Baking Over Zoom

Host a zoom meeting and choose a time where you send friends a recipe and you all cook it together. You can choose to make pumpkin desserts such as this pumpkin roll or opt for this dairy-free vegan butternut squash soup

  1. Learn a TikTok Halloween dance

There are so many fun Halloween-themed shuffling dances that you can learn alone or with friends over zoom or facetime. There is a great tutorial here. You can also learn Michael Jackson's Thriller dance with this link.

  1. Zoom Pumpkin Carving

Similar to the virtual costume party, play a movie in the background or share scary stories as  you carve pumpkins. At the end you can send out a poll to judge the best pumpkins. Bonus points if it is 2020 themed!

  1. Spooky Pictionary

Take the typical game of pictionary but move it online! Get the link for it here, where you can curate which words you want players to use.

And here are some options for you and your roommates. Many of these options could be modified to be done over zoom as well.

  1. Wine Candy Pairing

This stay-at-home event is for those who are 21+. Buy the assorted candies listed on this website with the wines that go with them. You can make a charcuterie board of all the sweets and vote for your favorite combos.

  1. Camping Under the Blue Moon

  1. Drive Through Haunted House

For more of a spook with your friends, check out this Haunted House in Aberdeen that is now a drive thru to comply with COVID-19 regulations. Many nights sell out so book your tickets now!

  1. Have a Mystery Party with your Roommates
