    College Park, MD, is the home of the University of Maryland. Our growing college town offers a great variety of shops and restaurants, featuring dishes that span the globe. A popular hiker-biker trail runs right through campus and past Lake Artemesia, a great picnicking spot. Neighboring communities offer shopping malls, movie theaters and just about every other amenity you can imagine. Just a Metro ride away, you can catch all the sights, culture, and nightlife of Washington, D.C. Check out concerts from global superstars at the Capital One Arena, catch a game featuring one of D.C.’s five major professional sports teams, explore historic Georgetown, or just stroll down the National Mall to visit one of the 11 free Smithsonian Museums and art galleries. You’re also only a half-hour MARC train ride from Baltimore and Annapolis, where you can walk along the Inner Harbor, take in an Orioles baseball or Ravens football game, and of course try our famous Maryland blue crabs.

    Public University

    Founded in 1856 as the Maryland Agricultural College, the University of Maryland (UMD) is the state’s flagship university and one of the original land-grant institutions in America. As a member of the Association of American Universities, the Big Ten Conference and the Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success, UMD is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent public research universities in the United States.

    As one of the world’s premier research institutions, the University of Maryland strives to transform lives by discovering new knowledge and putting it to work to benefit the state, our nation, and the world. The breadth of research across our 12 schools and colleges is fueled by more than 4,600 faculty who are developing innovative, research-driven solutions to critically important national and international challenges. The institution has a $1.9 billion operating budget and secures $560 million annually in external research funding.


    The University of Maryland is home to one of the leading intercollegiate athletics programs in the country. Eight Terrapin programs have combined to win a total of 44 national championships for the University of Maryland, which is the 2nd most of any Big Ten school. Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, the Terrapins have captured 25 team titles. UMD had 196 championships as a member of the ACC and 11 in the Southern Conference, bringing its total of conference titles to an astounding 231. The success of Maryland athletics is felt throughout the state and Maryland Pride has become synonymous with the Terrapins.

    Within our 12 colleges and more than 90 majors for undergraduates you will find a remarkable breadth and depth of academic pursuits for you to explore. Pick one, pick two or even create your own major through our Individual Studies Program. Explore a new interest with a minor or certificate program, or take part in one of our pre-professional programs. Our colleges are researching hot topics such as alternative energy, advising federal officials on homeland security, working with the state to reduce children’s obesity and investigating many other pressing issues. You can work side-by-side with faculty at the top of their fields: Pulitzer Prize recipients, Nobel laureates, and Emmy and Tony winners. Our more than 4,000 faculty also include world-renowned performers, successful entrepreneurs and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists, all ready to share their experiences and expertise with you.
