Demetrius's Story

Demetrius Jones thought he wanted to be a doctor when he was younger, but an interest in reading driven by his mom inspired him change his focus by middle school.

That's when he entered a short story contest—and he won.

Demetrius brought his life-long passion to The University of Baltimore, where he’s majoring in English with a specialization in Creative Writing. He’s minoring in Professional Writing. He speaks fondly of his professors for shaping him into the writer he’s always dreamed of being.

“When I came to UBalt, I just knew I wanted to write; I had no clue what exactly I wanted to do. I just knew I loved writing, no matter what it was. But coming here, I've learned poetry, I've learned memoir. I've never written either one before, and I love both.”

Demetrius didn’t know anyone when he first came to UBalt and it initially left him unsure how he would feel about choosing the University. Everything changed when he was assigned to a group project with a fellow Bee who would become one of his best friends.

“As soon as we got partnered together, we just clicked and ever since then, I’ve just connected with more and more people.”

Academically, Demetrius says he’s become a more confident writer and person in his time at UBalt, and that has led to some unexpected opportunities. In his third year, for example, he took over the school’s online newspaper, The Sting.
