Sofia chose to attend John Hopkins University because of its location in Baltimore. For her, investing time and effort in the Baltimore community is “simply a part of me completing my purpose.” Sofia is currently involved with many activities outside of the classroom. She works as a research assistant at the Center for Child and Community Health, serves as the American Public Health Association campus liaison and is involved with the Thread Head Family. She volunteers through Hopkins Community Connections, which is a Hopkins-based student organization that helps connect primarily underserved Spanish–speaking families to community and federal resources.
“All of my interactions with the Baltimore community have continuously left me with a longing to do more, participate more, and learn more.”
The Collegetown Fellowship has combined Sofia’s interests-social entrepreneurship, non-profit management, and building community relationships. She broadened her knowledge around social enterprises while creating a strong bond with classmates and the Baltimore Collegetown Fellowship staff.
