Towson is a bustling mini-city with family-friendly small-town charm. It’s a destination in itself and the gateway to the natural beauty and shopping meccas of Baltimore County.
Many of the shops, restaurants, and bars clustered around Towson’s roundabout cater to students. There are plenty of places to grab a cheap lunch, including local favorites like Sushi Hana, Pho Towson, and the Charles Village Pub—also a popular nightspot. Others include the Greene Turtle, Souris' Saloon, and Torrent Nightclub. Catch a movie at the new luxury Cinemark Theater (flicks are just $6.50 on Tuesdays).
Shop till you drop at the enormous Towson Town Center mall and downtown shops—Barnes & Noble, Trader Joe's, Urban Outfitters. Across from the mall there's a Record & Tape Traders, Ukazoo Books, Fresh Market, and a bustling lineup of small eateries. Just down Joppa Road sits an oasis of discount big-box stores: Target, Marshall's, Michael’s, Home Goods, and Staples.
Towson is packed with family-friendly neighborhoods and there’s more shopping and restaurants galore if you head north on York Road—including REI, just around the corner from the Timonium Fair Grounds, site of Oktoberfest and horse racing at the State Fair. A 10-minute drive from Towson will also land you in the Loch Raven Watershed area, one of Baltimore County’s havens for hiking, biking, and fishing.
If you need to stock your new place, you’ll want to head northeast to White Marsh, which boasts the area’s only Ikea.
