Artist Apprentice Intern

Internship Responsibilities

Role Summary:

The SALA Artist Apprentice Internship position is a unique opportunity for emerging artists to learn from the best teaching artists in the state during YAMD’s five-week Summer Arts and Learning Academy (SALA). Through active engagement during lessons, apprentice interns build valuable teaching skills while also nurturing the strengths, talents, and growth of Baltimore City students.


Scope of Work:

While apprentice interns are not responsible for formal lesson planning, they are an integral part of the classroom.  Their responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as an active member of an inspiring, passionate community of educators and artists!

  • Working side-by-side with a professional teaching artist, communicating ideas, questions, and concerns

  • Serving as a positive role model to students

  • Fully engaging in activities alongside students

  • Providing individual and behavioral support to students

  • Most interns work from 12:30-3:30 pm each day assisting with the afternoon arts major classes, but a limited number of all-day slots (8:30 am-3:30 pm) are also available and include assisting with the arts integrated math and literacy classes.

Skill Set Required

  • Strong skills as a practicing artist in one art form

  • Desire to work with youth and serve as a positive role model to students

  • A passion for the using the arts to engage with the community

  • Some experience working with students from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds preferred

  • Flexibility and ability to work collaboratively

  • Punctuality, professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills

Semester: Spring (Feb - May)
Hours per week: 10-20 hours
Workdays: Flexible
Pay: No
Authorization Requirements: U.S. Citizen/U.S. National
