Undergraduate Internship

Organization Description:

Irvine Nature Center is a non-profit educational organization that offers programs of environmental studies and natural science to children and adults of the greater Baltimore area. Our mission is to educate and inspire current and future generations to explore, respect and protect nature.

 

Internship Description:

This internship is unpaid. Interns in the Little Birds program at Irvine serve as teaching aides to help facilitate nature-based play in a safe, calm learning environment. Duties include engaging with children and parents during daily activities, assisting with outdoor exploration, and helping with set-up and clean-up. Interns must be physically capable of light hiking up to one mile per day and eager to engage with children and their caregivers throughout the class.

In addition, interns will work with their supervisor to identify and execute a long-term project. All interns will give an oral or poster presentation about their project on August 14, 2020.

Skill Set Required

Qualifications:

  • Experience and/or strong desire to work with children ages birth-3 years old.
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity about the natural world.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Positive attitude and professional demeanor.
  • Your own transportation.
  • Current First Aid/CPR helpful, but not required.

Majors

Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Outdoor Education, or Human Services. Natural sciences, social work, or related fields also considered.

Hours:

Variable depending on the Little Birds’ needs. All classes are held in the mornings, M-F, from 10:00-11:30 a.m. Requested service hours would be 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Candidates would ideally commitment to a minimum of 2.5 hours/week for a full semester (Sept.-Dec. or Feb.-May).

Preferred Areas of Study/Major(s)

Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Outdoor Education, or Human Services. Natural sciences, social work, or related fields also considered.
