About Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence
The Miller-Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence at Johns Hopkins Bayview aims to recognize and promote clinical excellence for the benefit of the individuals and communities that are served.
As defined in a paper written by the Academy published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings in Sept 2008, clinical excellence in academic medicine involves:
“Achieving a level of mastery in the following 6 areas as they relate to patient care: i. Communication & interpersonal skills; ii. Professionalism and humanism; iii. Diagnostic acumen; iv. Skillful negotiation of the healthcare system; v. Knowledge; vi. Scholarly approach to clinical practice, and exhibiting a passion for patient care, and explicitly modeling this mastery to medical trainees.”
To date, 50+ clinically excellent physicians from several clinical departments have been inducted into the Academy.
Academy initiatives, from Academy-hosted Grand Rounds to a medical student clinical excellence elective, have been successful and continue to be developed.
