Communications Intern

Internship Responsibilities

The Baltimore City Recreation and Parks’ communications intern is responsible for assisting in the fulfillment of BCRP’s marketing and communications goals. Special projects could include creating copy for internal and external communications, digital copy and online content, media relations, and any other marketing collateral and projects as assigned by the manager(s) of BCRP.  You will have administrative duties in developing and implementing communications strategies.

As a communication intern, you will collaborate with our marketing, public relations and advertising team in all stages of campaign implementation. Your insightful contribution will help develop, expand and maintain our communications channels.

The intern will also assist in the development of an agency rebrand and promotional campaign. The rebrand will be designed to refresh the brand of the agency and give guidelines for promotional use. The campaign will consist of creating copy for social media and the website.

This position is very autonomous in which the intern will be able to work off-site and/or away from the office. Candidate must possess a creative mind, with prior successes in driving the creative process. The intern will report directly to the Public Information Officer and Chief of Marketing and Media Service and also work closely with a project team that includes other BCRP staff, the mayor’s office, and other volunteers.

This internship will help you acquire many professional skills and provide you with knowledge of various communications functions. Ultimately, you will gain broad experience in marketing and should be prepared to enter any fast-paced work environment.

Duration: The bulk of work will be completed between January and May.

Hours: 10 to 20 hours per week. Typically 2 to 3 days per week. Schedule negotiable.

Skill Set Required

  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and Dropbox

  • Having a computer and access to Microsoft office software

  • Some Marketing and/ or Communications/Digital Communications experience.

  • Strong desire to learn and professional drive

  • Solid understanding of different marketing techniques

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent knowledge of MS Office

  • Some familiarity with communications computer software and online applications (e.g. CRM tools, Online analytics, and Google Adwords)

  • Passion for strategic communications and its best practices

  • Highly organized, creative and detail-oriented.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Empathy to work with diverse customers, staff, managers, and authorities.

  • Must be able to deliver quick turnarounds if necessary.

  • Ability to work with limited supervision.

  • Strong understanding of youth culture in parks and recreation.

  • Strong planning and project management competencies.

  • Creative mind, with prior successes in driving the creative process.

  • Must be extremely organized and detail oriented

  • Must have excellent time management skills

  • Must have the ability to work independently as well as in partnership with a team

  • Must be able to define and work to deadlines

  • Must have a sense of humor and learn to have fun!
