Internship Responsibilities

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra seeks a Marketing and Communication Intern.

INTRODUCTION
The BSO’s marketing department promotes the world-class Baltimore Symphony Orchestra both in the Baltimore and DC metro areas. The BSO presents nearly 130 concerts throughout the season across a diverse range of programming including Classical, SuperPops, Movies with Orchestra, and Family concerts.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The marketing intern’s projects will include, but are not limited to:

  • Brainstorming, developing and assisting in promotions and partnerships to generate ticket sales
  • Assisting in developing grassroots marketing plans and distributing collateral to relevant locations
  • Researching projects and web/social media content
  • Maintaining concierge desk and materials
  • Assisting in the execution of subscriber retention, loyalty and recognition programs
  • Proofreading print advertising and collateral materials, including routing materials internally
  • Clipping BSO print advertisements and articles for archives
  • Group sales contact and other data management
  • Supporting marketing initiatives at concerts

The marketing intern will also assist with administrative and general marketing duties, and at times, will support the BSO Marketing Department at both venues, including The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland.

The marketing intern is supervised by the Assistant Director of Marketing and assists in all marketing needs. The intern is eligible for complimentary tickets when available.

Skill Set Required

QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates should possess strong writing, organizational and interpersonal skills and have an interest in gaining valuable and direct experience in the marketing department of a major performing arts organization. College students at the junior, senior and graduate levels studying marketing, public relations or communication are preferred. Classical music knowledge and ticketing experience a major plus. Please include a list of completed relevant coursework as well as whether college credit will be requested for this internship.

Pay: Yes, $50 per week; eligible for complimentary tickets when available stipend

About Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

For over a century, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has been recognized as one of America’s leading orchestras and one of Maryland’s most significant cultural institutions. Under the direction of music director Marin Alsop, the orchestra is internationally renowned and locally admired for its innovation, performances, recordings and educational outreach initiatives including OrchKids. The BSO is widely recognized for its highly acclaimed recordings, including a 2010 disc on the Decca label featuring Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F and Rhapsody in Blue, as well as the 2017 Naxos release of Bernstein’s Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2. Both recordings were led by Alsop and feature pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Alsop also led the BSO in its 2009 Naxos recording of Leonard Bernstein’s MASS. Recent releases include Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet with Alsop and Handel’s Messiah with conductor Edward Polochick and the Concert Artists of Baltimore Symphonic Chorale.

 

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performs annually for more than 350,000 people throughout the State of Maryland. Since 1982, the BSO has performed at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. In 2005, with the opening of The Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, MD, the BSO became the nation’s first orchestra with year-round venues in two metropolitan areas.
