Naturalist Intern - Native Plant & Nursery Assistant

Internship Responsibilities

Organization Description:

Irvine Nature Center is a non-profit educational organization that offers programs of environmental studies and natural science to children and adults of the greater Baltimore area.  Our mission is to educate and inspire current and future generations to explore, respect and protect nature.

Position Description:

This internship is UNPAID, but eligible for academic or course credit if approved by your educational institution. Irvine is looking for someone to assist in the native plant nursery this spring. This is an opportunity to learn lots about how to grow plants from seed and to learn some of the plants that can be found in Maryland.  The position will focus on learning about how to collect and prepare native plant seeds, the process of sowing and germination, and then transplanting and planting.  Plants, both trees and perennials are grown for restoration projects around Irvine.  There will be additional maintenance tasks such as watering and maintaining planted areas.

Position Responsibilities:

• Prepare seeds for sowing using guides for native seeds

• Sow seeds and help with keeping seedlings free of weeds and pests

• Grow plants until ready for planting into gardens and restoration areas

• Use knowledge gained to design and plant a small garden with plants labeled and a guide to the plants


• Flexible schedule

• Minimum of 10-12 hours/week

• Must be available Tuesday – Friday between 8am-4pm

Project Details:

• Learn about the properties (height, flower time, growth habits etc) of native plants to plant and label a small garden

• Willingness to get dirty, work outdoors.

• Seed sowing and transplanting requires being able to work gently with small plants

• Being detail orientated helps to keep plants clearly labelled

Preferred Areas of Study/Major(s)

Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Outdoor/Environmental Education, Human Services, Natural Sciences, Social Work, Psychology, or other related fields also considered.
