Internship Site: Union Mills Homestead and Grist Mill, Westminster, MD
Amanda interned this past summer at the Union Mills Homestead, the Shriver family homestead and a national historic district with buildings dating to 1797 that now serves as a museum of American culture. Working in Curation and Conservation, she updated the Post Office room by updating descriptions and pictures of all the objects within the room while also creating digital copies. She gave tours to educate the public as a house docent along with attending events at the Homestead throughout the summer. As a history major, this internship provided a direct experience working in the museum industry and preserving history.
During this experience, Amanda learned how to of work within a department, manage her time, and interact with other professionals in a composed manner to minimize and prevent conflicts.
Amanda’s experience opened her eyes to future career options. She now says “I want to pursue a career in historic preservation, with lots of personal interactions throughout the day.”
