This is Just the Beginning

I chose Baltimore for college because it’s my hometown, and I knew I wasn’t finished with it yet. Many students leave to start fresh, but for me, this is just the beginning. I want to help improve and bring change to Baltimore’s underserved neighborhoods.”

WORKING FOR CHANGE

Why did you choose your major?

I chose to major in public health because of what I’ve noticed in my neighborhood.

I knew from a young age that I want to change the medical system for children and mothers of color. Many children of color struggle to get needed medication due to a lack of money or insurance. Mothers of color are often misdiagnosed and do not receive proper treatment for themselves or their babies. This injustice made me want to help improve health care access and outcomes, and that is why I chose a concentration in Maternal and Child Health within my public health major.

What do you love most about UMBC?

What I love most about my school is how closely connected it feels. It’s easy to find friends, and those friendships turn into bonds that feel like family. In the end, it feels like you are at home with your family.

UMBC also offers great opportunities for students in all majors. Because of this, I was able to build relationships with professors who helped me find internships and community service opportunities. These connections have helped me grow both in my major and in my community.

What do you love most about the area?

In Baltimore, I love spending time around Fells Point and Wolfe Street. There are so many small shops that you just have to stop and explore, and the lights and view of the harbor make it feel like a cozy small town.

At UMBC, my favorite spot is the ILSB (Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building). It holds so many memories for me, from CSU (Caribbean Student Union) events that bring Caribbean students together to study sessions with my friends. I also love simply sitting there to eat lunch with my roommate, making the space feel like a second home.

If someone were to visit you for a weekend, what locations in Baltimore would you absolutely have to show them?

If someone visited me for a weekend in Baltimore, I would take them to Blue Moon Too on Light Street. It’s a spot that almost everyone in Baltimore knows and loves. They have amazing breakfast options, and their famous cinnamon rolls are a must-try! It’s the perfect place to show someone the local vibe and enjoy a good meal together.
