Internship Responsibilities
Maryland Public Service Scholars Programs offer paid internships/fellowships and leadership development opportunities for students of all majors to explore careers in government and nonprofits while making a difference in Maryland. Each program includes full-time placement at a nonprofit or government agency under senior-level mentorship, orientation, seminars to deepen understanding of public service, and networking events with Maryland leaders. Fellows also engage in social justice and equity reflection activities and collaborate on projects that apply their skills, culminating in presentations to stakeholders. This is your chance to gain hands-on experience, grow as a leader, and create positive change in Maryland!
The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) Fellows Program offers Maryland college students an immersive introduction to careers in public service, focusing on the state’s integrative transportation system. This program combines hands-on work, mentorship, and professional development to prepare participants for impactful roles in the public sector. Administered by The Shriver Center in partnership with the Office of the Secretary of Transportation, this program empowers students of all majors to explore the vital intersection of transportation and public service while making meaningful contributions to Maryland’s infrastructure.
- Fellows are placed in an MDOT office and perform substantive work, full-time for 10 weeks under the mentorship of a senior-level professional
- Fellows attend an orientation and weekly seminars to strengthen their understanding of the functions of Maryland Department of Transportation and state government and participate in reflection activities
- Fellows attend meetings, events, field trips, and networking opportunities to connect with Maryland’s leaders
- Fellows engage in a multi-step reflection process which explores their own relationship to social justice and equity
- Fellows put their knowledge and skills into practice, researching and proposing a solution to a transportation challenge
Qualifications
- Rising Junior or Senior in the summer of participation. *Please note: if you are currently a sophomore, you are eligible if you will be a Junior in the upcoming summer
- Attending a Maryland institution OR a current Maryland resident attending an out-of-state institution
- GPA 2.7 or above
- Available May 27 – August 8, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm
- Students must have the ability to be in Central Maryland 2-3 days a week
