Internship Responsibilities
The National Transportation Center at Morgan State is hiring a summer undergraduate intern to help build an AI-powered research assistant.
The intern will work hands-on with large language models and retrieval-augmented generation to develop a prototype tool that delivers fast, citation-grounded answers from curated transportation references. It's a chance to gain real experience in applied AI development while contributing to transportation safety research.
What You'll Do
- Define use cases and requirements for a GPT-powered AI research assistant
- Curate and organize a document corpus of transportation references with structured metadata
- Pre-process documents (text extraction, chunking, tagging) and build a searchable vector store
- Implement and refine a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) pipeline with citation-backed responses
- Develop test questions, run iterative evaluations, and track performance improvements
- Document the full workflow and deliver a final prototype demonstration
Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a BA in computer science, data science, engineering, or a related STEM field
- Knowledge of prompt engineering and GPT model structures
- Basic coding proficiency in Python
- Experience with RAG pipelines or vector databases
- Strong organizational skills and ability to document technical work clearly
