Internship Responsibilities

The Banner newsroom is looking for an arts and culture intern to join us in our newsroom this summer. Interns will be responsible for writing about creative scenes throughout the Baltimore area and covering the region’s art institutions, including (but not limited to) theaters, music halls, art galleries and museums. Reporters should also be prepared to write daily, news stories in addition to longer-term features. They should be able to develop outside-the-box ideas and have strong digital storytelling skills. Each intern will pitch a “passion project,” whether an enterprise story, photo collage or Instagram story, to be completed by the end of the internship. Interns will be assigned a mentor and attend weekly sessions on sourcing and interview skills.

 

Interns will be responsible for producing content – photos, stories, and social media posts – for the local digital publication. Interns will receive assignments from editors but should also be able to generate and pitch their own interesting story ideas. We are looking for people who are quick thinkers, energetic, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. They should be able to come up with “outside the box ideas” and have strong digital storytelling skills. Qualifications

Qualifications

 What you'll bring:

  • Experience from a college newspaper or previous internship
  • Interesting story ideas
  • Clear and concise writing skills or strong photography and social media skills
  • Knowledge of emerging trends and journalism and digital communications
  • Strong research, quantitative or qualitative skills
  • Openness to new ideas, editing and learning from veteran journalists and editors
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Flexibility and ability to adjust to the changing news cycle
  • Ability to learn about new subjects quickly and accurately
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States - unfortunately, sponsorship will not be provided for this position.
