The Valerie J. Maynard Legacy Internship is a partnership program between the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Valerie J. Maynard Foundation, to honor the legacy and vision of the artist who was a pioneering member of the Black Arts Movement, and a beloved icon of the Baltimore arts community (and beyond). This unique exchange provides interns with the opportunity to learn and gain experience in the museum field and in a private collection setting. 
 

We are seeking to hire one new Legacy Intern to work at the BMA and Foundation for the upcoming cohort which will run from Summer 2026-Spring 2027. 

Valerie J. Maynard Foundation
The Foundation is located in the Station North Arts District. While at the VJMF, the Legacy Intern will be onsite to catalog and inventory artwork and archival materials pertaining to the artist’s work and collection. They will work alongside visual artists and legacy specialists to learn how to care for the robust, multi-faceted collection.

Responsibilities 
• Organize and maintain accurate records
• Manage artist’s inventory
• Assist with moving, packaging, and shipping artwork as needed
• Attend trainings provided by the Foundation

The Baltimore Museum of Art
During the Summer & Fall 2026 cycles, the Legacy Intern will work in the Contemporary Department to support the upcoming Jerrell Gibbs exhibition with research and interpretive materials (audio guide, labels, etc.). The Intern will also assist with a future exhibition project that is in its research phase. This will include research on Black diasporic artistic production, particularly in key centers such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Nigeria.

During the Spring 2027 cycle, the Legacy Intern will transition into our Prints, Drawings, and Photographs Department to conduct research to locate alternate versions and available loans for specific objects and artists. They’ll gather historical background material on artists, objects, and manufacturing processes. The Intern will also request research images from external sources and procure translations of specific texts or archival documents.

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:  
• Recent graduate from an accredited undergraduate or graduate program (within 5 years)   
• 5 years of recent and relevant work experience may be substituted for a degree

The VJM Legacy Intern should have an interest in:
• Social Justice
• Uplifting BIPOC artists
• Community engagement
• Archiving practices (everything from personal correspondence to artwork)
 

The VJM Legacy Intern should possess: 
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to work with a team as well as independently at times
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail (to maintain accurate records)
